Inactive Door (or leaf)
That leaf of a pair of doors which does not contain a lock, but is bolted when closed, and to which the strike is fastened to receive the latch or bolt of the active door.

Inconspicuous
Barely detectable with the naked eye at a distance of 6' to 8'.

Indicator Button
A device used in connection with a hotel lock to indicate whether or not the room is occupied.

Integral (locks and latches) A term used to describe a type of mortise lock having cylinder in the knob.

Keeper
Synonymous with Strike

Key Change
The combination of cuts in a key which enable it to operate the lock for which intended.

Key Plate
A small plate or escutcheon having only a keyhole.

Keyway
The aperture in lock cylinders which receives the key and closely engages with it throughout its length.

Kick Plate
A protective plate applied on the lower rail of the door to prevent the door from being marred.

Kiln-dried
Lumber dried in a closed chamber in which the removal of moisture is controlled by artificial heat and usually by relative humidity.

Knife Marks
Very fine lines that appear across a panel that may look as if they are raised resulting from some defect.

Knob
A projecting handle for operating a lock.

Knob Shank
The projecting stem of a knob into which the spindle is fastened.

Knob Top
That part of the knob which the hand grasps.

Knot (sound)
Cross section of a branch or limb with grain usually running at right angles to that of the wood in which it occurs.

Knots
Sound knots less than 1/4" in diameter.

Knots, Blending Pin
Sound knots 1/4" or less in diameter that do not contain dark centers. Blending pin knots are detectable at a distance of 6' to 8' and do not seriously detract from the overall appearance of the panel.

Knots, Sound, Tight
Knots that are solid across their face and fixed by growth to retain their place.

Knuckle
The enlarged part of a hinge into which the pin is inserted.

Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL)
A composite of wood strand elements with wood fibers primarily oriented along the length of the member. The least dimension of the strands shall not exceed 0.25 in. and the average length shall be a minimum of 150 times the least dimension.

Lap
Condition where veneers composing plywood are so misplaced that one piece overlaps the other and does not make a smooth joint.

Latch Bolt
A beveled spring bolt, usually operated by a knob, handle or turn.

Leaf (of a pair of doors)
One of the two doors forming a pair of doors.

Lever Handle
A horizontal handle for operating the bolt(s) of a lock.

Lever Tumbler
Flat tumbler having a pivoted motion actuated by the turning of the key and controlling the locking function.

Lip of a Strike
The projection part on which the latch bolt rides.

Lock Block
Concealed block same thickness as a door stile or core which is adjacent to the inside edge of the stile at the midpoint and into which a lock is fitted.

Lock Rail (of the door)
The horizontal member of a door intended to receive the lock case.

Lock Set
A lock, complete with trim, such as knobs, escutcheons, or handles.

Lock Stile (of the door)
The stile to which the lock is applied as distinguished from the hinge stile.
