Master Key
Operates any quantity of cylinders of different individual key changes.

Master Keying
An arrangement of cylinders having individual key changes which permits them all to be operated by a single key, called a master key.

Medium Density Overlay - A panel product particularly well suited for opaque (paint) finishes.

Medullary Rays
Strips of cells extending radially within a tree and varying in height from a few cells in some species to four or more inches in oak. The rays serve primarily to store food and transport it horizontally in the tree. On quartersawn oak, the rays form a conspicuous figure, sometimes referred to as flecks.

Mortise
A cavity made to receive a lock or other hardware; also the act making such a cavity.

Mortise bolt
A door bolt designed to be mortised into a door rather than applied to its surface.

Mullion
A fixed or movable post dividing an opening vertically.

Olive Knuckle Hinge
A paumelle hinge with knuckles forming an oval shape.

Orange Peel
In finishing, slight depressions in surface, similar to the skin of an orange.

Overhead Concealed Closer
A closer concealed in the head frame with an arm connecting with the door at the top rail.

Particleboard Core
This term also includes flakeboard and chipboard. Manufactured from natural wood reduced particles, fibers and chips mixed with binders and formed by the use of heat and pressure into panels.

Patches
Matching wood pieces carefully inserted and glued into the door face after defective portions have been removed.

Paumelle
A style of hinge embodying a single joint of the pivot type, generally of modern, or streamlined design.

Pin Tumblers
Small sliding pins in a lock cylinder, working against coil springs and preventing the cylinder plug from rotating until the pins are raised to the proper alignment by bitting of the key.

Pitch
Bleeding resin.

Plain Sliced
Veneer sliced parallel to the pith of the log and approximately tangent to the growth rings to achieve flat cut veneer. Plain sliced veneer can be cut using either a horizontal of vertical slicing machine or by the half round method using a rotary lathe.

Pleasing Matched
A face containing components, which provides a pleasing overall appearance. The grain of the various components need not be matched at the joints. Sharp color contrasts at the joints of the components are not permitted.

Plug (of a cylinder)
The round part containing the keyway and rotated by the key to transmit motion to the bolt(s).

Preassembled Lock
A lock that has all the parts assembled as a unit at the factory, and when installed in a rectangular notch cut into the door edge, requires little or no disassembly.

Premium Grade
The highest grade available in both materials and workmanship intended for the finest work. This is naturally the most expensive grade.
