Positive Pressure Listing Categories

The listing agencies have agreed on the following definitions of categories that relate to the construction and installation of fire doors to meet positive pressure and smoke control requirements. For reference, please see the listing below for a definition of each category:

CATEGORY A – DOORS – No additional edge-sealing system required
This category includes doors which do not require the use of special frames (Category C) or add on edge seal systems (Category G) to meet Positive Pressure fire test requirements. See individual listings for requirements for labeling with a Smoke & Draft Control Mark. All assemblies are identified by a label or marking bearing the wording “Listed (Product)”, a time interval, temperature rise (if applicable), a serial number and the listing agency’s certification mark. (Unless otherwise specified, all fire doors have a nominal thickness of 1-3/4”.)

  CATEGORY B – DOORS – Additional edge-sealing system required
This category includes doors which must be installed in a frame that incorporated built-in edge seals system (Category C) or in a standard fire rated frame using an added-on edge seal systems (Category G) to meet Positive Pressure fire test requirements.

CATEGORY C– FRAMES
This category includes frames which have been evaluated for use in positive pressure assemblies with doors listed under Category B.

NOTE: Frames listed under existing non-positive pressure standards may be used in positive pressure assemblies, as shown in the door listings under Category A or B, or when an edge-sealing system is used per Category G. All other frames will be listed in Category C. All assemblies are identified by a label or marking bearing the wording, “Listed (Product)”, a time interval, a serial number and the listing agency’s certification mark.

  CATEGORY D – DOOR/FRAME ASSEMBLIES
This category includes doors and frames that are labeled for positive pressure compliance as an assembly. All assemblies are identified by a label or marking bearing the wording “Listed (Product)”, a time interval, temperature rise (if applicable), a serial number and the listing agency’s certification mark. (Unless otherwise specified, all fire doors have a nominal thickness of 1-3/4”.)

CATEGORY E – HARDWARE
Products listed in this category have been evaluated for use in positive pressure assemblies as shown in the listings.

Note: The listed types of hardware do not require specific positive pressure listing.

Cylindrical latches without combustible content.
Mortise latches without combustible content.
Surface applied hardware without combustible content.
Steel leaf hinges
Hardware installed less than 40” above the sill.

All assemblies are identified by a label or marking bearing the product’s name and the listing agency’s certification mark.

CATEGORY F – LIGHT KITS
Products listed in this category have been evaluated for use in positive pressure fire door assemblies for specific types of doors and with specific glazing systems. Refer to the individual listings for limitations and requirements.

Note: Glass and glazing material used in these assemblies do not require a positive pressure marking but must be marked as fire rated.
Listed maximum sizes of lights are based on sizes tested and may exceed local code requirements. All assemblies are identified by a label or marking bearing the listing agency’s certification mark.

  CATEGORY G – EDGE-SEALING SYSTEMS
This category includes intumescent-type systems that are surface-applied (such as kerf applied, adhesive backed or mechanically attached) to frames or doors. It includes meeting edge seals for use in pair and double egress assemblies. All edge-sealing systems are identified by a label or marking bearing the listing agency’s certification mark.

CATEGORY H – SMOKE AND DRAFT CONTROL GASKETING
This category includes gasket systems that are surface-applied (such as kerf applied, adhesive backed or mechanically attached) to frames or doors. It includes gaskets for the meeting edge for use in pair and double egress assemblies. These gasket systems have been evaluated in accordance with UBC 7-2, Part II.

NOTE: This category covers gasket systems that have been evaluated for use in positive pressure rated assemblies, but do not “provide” an edge-sealing system to the opening (see Category G).
All smoke & draft control gasketing systems are identified by a label or marking bearing the listing agency’s certification mark.

CATEGORY I – SMOKE AND DRAFT CONTROL DOOR ASSEMBLIES (Except Swinging Doors. See Category A, B, & D)
This section includes door assemblies that are required to be evaluated for a smoke and draft control rating per UBC 7-2 Part II. These assemblies are also evaluated for fire resistance under neutral pressure. Some examples: elevator doors, rolling steel doors, etc. Note: See ITS Directory of Listed Products, Fire Resistance Products & Components/Smoke Control Door Assemblies for products tested and listed to UL-1784/NFPA-105.
